Undergraduate program in public health
Introduction of the program
The bachelor of public health degree is an interdisciplinary program that focuses on the scientific dimensions of health and is designed to prepare scholar-practitioners with knowledge and skills in the core concepts of public health including health education and promotion, research and statistics in health, environmental health, epidemiology, and health administration, as well as in the planning, evaluation, organization, and conduct of public health services.
Learning objectives
The successful candidate will learn the following:
- Analyze local and international public health problems with inferences from history and milestone in the evolution of the public health.
- Apply public health concepts as a broad and complex domain of professional practice and inquiry, with specific reference to the local context
- Apply research skills to generate well-formed questions and approaches to answering them – including research questions, data sources, and appropriate methodologies
- Assess evidence used to implement and evaluate Public Health interventions
- Communicate effectively about public health issues
- Examine ethical issues relevant to public health practice, especially as they apply to local specificities, and justify proposed courses of action
- Design health education strategies and interventions
- Assess the appropriateness and impact of health education strategies and interventions
- Demonstrate leadership skills in public health
- Apply management theories and concepts to public health issues
- Demonstrate knowledge of effective management of public health programs and interventions
Program duration
This is four year or eight semester fulltime program. It involves 80% classroom instruction and 20% field assignments and the aim is to provide students with opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills in Public Health to identify public health problems and design interventions targeted to impact the overall public health in Somalia.
