Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim is an assistant professor at The University of British Columbia. Mohamed
is also an affiliated investigator at the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute (VCHRI), and
the World Health Organization Somalia Country Office.
Prior to joining The University of British Columbia, Dr. Mohamed completed his Doctor of
Philosophy with a focus on global mental health at Simon Fraser University (Canada) Faculty of
Health and his dissertation looked at Somali Canadians utilization of mainstream mental health
services and alternative approaches to healing. His research focusses on integrating mental
health services in primary health care, universal health care especially in training
interdisciplinary health professionals and addressing human right issues within the system.
Dr. Mohamed graduated with a Master’s Degree (Mental Health & Addiction specialization)
from Washington University in St. Louis (USA), and Post-Masters Certificate in Global Mental
from Harvard University (USA). He is a past clinical addiction fellow at the British Columbia
Center on Substance Use (Canada).
Before joining academia, he has worked in the health sector for over 20 years in community
health in Kenya, refugee health with Medicines Sans Frontiers at Dadaab refugee camp, SoS
International in Somalia, WHO Somalia, mental health and addiction in Kenya, Canada and USA
in acute, tertiary and community mental health settings.
